LEARN CONDITIONAL SENTENCES WITH A SMALL STORY
Learn conditional sentences with a small story
Conditional sentences consist of a main clause and a conditional clause (sometimes called an if-clause). The conditional clause usually begins with if or unless. The conditional clause can come before or after the main clause.
For example:-
- If it rains, I’ll get wet. (Zero conditional)
- If we don’t leave right now, we will be late. (First conditional)
- If I were a
bird, I would fly above those clouds. (Second conditional)
- We could have a lot of money, if they hadn’t spent lavishly on the birthday party. (Third conditional)
A
TEENAGE TUSSLE
Maya, a teenage girl, was in a very bad mood. She had a fight with her parents, after which she came next to a pond in the backyard of her house. Leaning against the only oak tree at the edge of the pond, she was staring at the clouds hovering in the sky. Her friend Alice soon came to give her company and have some relaxing and enjoying moments together.
Maya: I hate them, Alice. All of them. If I were a bird, I would fly high above these cotton- like clouds and go as far as possible. Mum and Dad always scold me for petty things. They are so mean to me while they always remain lenient to my brother. Why this Discrimination?
Alice: Umm...Why are you saying this? Your mum and dad are so kind, gentle, and caring. They act like this so you don’t get in any trouble.
Maya: Alice. If you had lived with my parents, you
wouldn’t have said this. I want to go with my friends for camping in the
forest but they didn’t give me permission. They think I’m very young to do things
by myself. That’s bullshit, isn’t it?
Alice: I’m very sorry if it hurts you. Btw, My mum and dad are the same as yours. They too hesitate to send me away from home.
Maya: All parents are the same. We should run away, shouldn’t we? I’m fed up with them. They think that they know what’s best for us. But they are very wrong, aren’t they? Life is boring without adventure.
Alice: Forget it, Maya. Let’s talk about something else. Don’t cry over spilled milk. If I had the pond like yours, I would swim in it, especially at this time of hours.
Maya: You’re with whom? With me or my parents?
In the meantime, Maya’s mom came in the backyard and brought a jar full of freshly baked cookies. “Who wants to eat these cookies?” Maya’s mom called out loudly. Maya forgot all her hatred and grabbed the jar with a mischievous smile.
